Q: how do I clear the SES light on a BMW 328?
I have a 2000 328ci that had the SES light on form a secondary air pump failure. I replaced the air pump and sensor, now I need to clear the code. you can;t disconnect the battery like on some cars. anyone know how to do this without the expensive diag tool from BMW.

A: Local auto parts suppliers have scan tools that can clear codes. The codes will self-clear but only after a certain amount of drive cycles & conditions are met with proper operation. (can be days or a month or so)

P.S. Don’t forget to check the vacuum line that operates the air pump control valve at the passenger front of the engine’s valve cover, this little rubber hose tends to rot and/or split throwing a secondary air injection failure code.

Q: How reliable is a 2000 BMW 328?
I am looking at buying a used 2000 bmw 328ci and was wondering how reliable they are. How often do they break and what breaks? Also when do they break? I have not determined a particular vehicle yet so I want to know what I can expect at certain mileages. Thanks.

Please don’t answer if you don’t know specifically.

A: Pretty vague on the question but I’ll try to answer what I can.

Engine and tranny will last well over 200,000 miles if you change the oil at 3-5,000 mile intervals and change all the other drivetrain fluids every 30,000.

Rubber bushings deteriorate over time so around 150k you may want the refresh them, usually not something critical though. Just better handling.

The cooling system is good for about 100,000 miles so if its around there you will probably want to do the radiator, waterpump, hoses, etc.

Other than that is the normal stuff you would find on any car. Parts will be more expensive than a Honda but which one is a more expensive car? Ok so I may be biased, hahaha. I own a 97 328 with 175k miles and it still runs like it did at 100k. Keep up with the maintanence and it will last a while.

Q: I own a 96 bmw 328 is i need to buy new rims any web sites or places where i can get them?
I just want some that look nice i don’t want soo much luxury i also dont want to spend over $1000

A: Check out E-Bay, they have some cheap and cheerful alloys. I got mine form there and they where good Quality.

Q: WHat’s the difference between BMW 328 i and BMW 325 i and 335 and which one do you recommend?

A: Ok, there are many different series, types, and models of bmws… There are the letter types ex.) M series, X series, Z series… And then there are the number series, which are the most common. There are always three numbers, and each digit has a meaning. The first digit is how physically large or small the body of the car is. There used to be 3,5,6, and 7 series, but the 1 and 8 series were added in recent years. The numbers are self-explanatory, 1 series being the smallest chassis and 8 being the largest. Then we move onto the second two digits, which tell how big of an engine the car has, in liters. So, for example…

A 325i is a midsize car with a 2.5 liter 6 cylinder engine. It’s engine is on the smaller side, which means great on gas.
A 328i is a midsize car with a 2.8 liter 6 cylinder engine. This is the most popular bmw in production, because people like midsize cars with reasonable gas mileage.
A 335i is a midsize car with a 3.5 liter 6 cylinder engine. It is the fastest “numbered” 3-series you can get.. The fastest is an M3… 4.0 liter 414 hp V8… I like to think that “M” 3 stands for the mother of all three series.

I own an M3 myself, and highly reccomend it.. But from the choices you’ve listed, I suggest the 335i… Due to sheer power and performance.

Q: what is the difference between the BMW 328 i and Xi?

A: xi all wheal drive
i rear wheal drive

Q: 1999 BMW 328 ci coupe ABS and ASC lights on dashboard?
I purchased the car and a few days later whilst driving the ABS and ASC lights came on the dashboard. The traction control yellow alert is also switched on. Could it just be a sensor? Also as the lights are on does this mean the ABS and traction is not working at the moment or is it just a warning? Can anyone tell me how to go around resolving this, Many Thanks. Oh and the airbag light is also on.

A: The airbag light is just a glitch, I once bought a 2003 318Ci and they sorted that a week later.

Q: I have a 1998 bmw 328 is, can some one tell me if I can upgrade my wheels from a set from a 2006 330i car?
wheels I have now are size 16 and the new ones will be 17s!

A: Yes no problem

Q: BMW 328, Infiniti G35 or Lexus is250 which is the most reliable?
BMW 328, Infiniti G35 or Lexus is250 which is the most reliable?
I am in the market of buying a mid luxury car and wanted to buy a used car (2008) and wanted owners opinions on repair cost, reliability and value of the cars I listed and I know Lexus is250 might most likely be the winner here but the car is truly UGLY (modified corolla bred with a camry IMO) are the rest really that bad (I have heard horrid stories)

A: bmw would be the best pick because they are made in germany and the germans pick quality over quantity, it will cost more but they last longer i know people how have BMW’s from the early 50’s.
If you herd the news lexus in made by toyota and they have break and roll over problems, Infinity cost a lot to repair and they are made in japan, which means import costs for every thing

Q: does anyone have a 2007 bmw 328 with trunk mount cd player?
want to install after market trunk mount cd changer in my 2007 bmw 328i coupe is it possible?

A: certainly.

Q: Can a 1996 328 BMW use ethanol blended fuel being sold by Australian companies?

A: I wouldn’t BMW’s are designed to run premium unleaded so anything with less octane will not do it any good

Q: 1998 BMW 328 is timing belt or chain?
Im looking at purchasing a 98 BMW 328 is with 54k miles on it. Does it have a timing belt or a timing chain. When should this be changed? What are the major BMW services that need to be performed for this car?

A: As stated above, it is a chain. They will normally last the life of the car. That should be 250-300K miles.
One thing you want to be aware of is the cooling system on these cars. If you get to 75K and the water pump hasn’t been replaced yet, you are very lucky and should go ahead and replace it. The originals had plastic impellers and they break anywhere from 50-90K miles.

Q: does anyone know what kind of oil a 99 bmw 328 i sedan takes?
my husband is about to change the oil an di need to make sure! HELP

A: it depends on the weather, you should use 5w-30 if you are in cold weather and 10w-30 if you are in a moderate temp. It is not a big deal though. If you put in the wrong stuff, it still isn’t usually wrong. I always switch and my husband yells at me but it really doesn’t make a difference.

Q: Where do I find the resister or relay for the blower fan on a BMW 328 convertable?

A: Behind the left hand side kick panel. It looks like a hedgehog

Q: A BMW 328 2000 model would be good for approximately how many miles?
let’s say well-maintained. 150k? 200k?

A: its really the same as any other car….there are honda civics that have plus 200,000 miles, volvos, fords way more than that.
if the car is well maintained, serviced regularly, and oil changed every 3000mi or 3 mos could last for a long time…big difference with a bmw:
-dpendability ratings are generally only fair which means that repairs are more frequent (driveline, chassis, electrics)
-shop rates and cost of parts is right at the very top of the scale which means that maintaining a bmw is an expensive proposition

Q: What kind of car is better a Ford Focus or a BMW 328??
Is it worth it to pay the extra $$$ for a BMW???

A: Love my Focus. Never driven BMW.
