Q: Do BMW 5 series come with a space saver spare tyre/wheel? (UK please)?
I am about to purchase a 2005 (55 reg) used BMW 5 series. I have noticed in the boot of my intended purchase that the spare tyre/wheel is missing? I spoke with the dealer and he told me that he believed BMW did not supply one for this model. I also noted that there was no wheel brace or tools supplied with the car. Does anyone know if this is the case or have I been ill informed by the dealer? Thank You.

A: Hi qpr,

The latest 5 series you are talking about usually comes with runflat tyres. Therefore, tools and a spare are not required.

I say “usually” because you can have a spare (space saver) which sits in a black foam dish in the lower boot. This is an extra option, available as a complete kit.

I have known customers before who have got rid of there runflat tyres and got a spare. I have also known customers who keep runflat tyres and get a spare (for peace of mind).

Runflat tyres are very good, I have driven a 5 series with 4 flat tyres as a demonstration and it is impressive. I’m not knocking them at all, but be aware that if you want to add a spare/tools then you can.

If you are buying from a BMW dealer and want extra peace of mind, negotiate a spare and tools into the deal. Otherwise just relax knowing you’ve bought a quality car :)

Good luck, Pyth

Q: Why are used Audi A6, BMW 5 series, Merc E-class more expensive?
Than the higher end Audi A8, BMW 7 series & Merc S-class? ,for example a 2006 audi A6 costs 12500£ where as the top end 2006 A8 fully loded costs 14000

A: Because they are made in Europe. Most cars there are very expensive, even with their maintenance.

Q: 2005 5 series BMW Dashboard Circle Light with Exclamation?
what does it mean?

A: That means Dynamic Stability Control or Dynamic Traction Control
When it flashes, it means the vehicle it braking itself to regain traction.
If it stays on when you are driving (NOT flashing) it means your Dynamic Stability Control or Dynamic Traction Control is malfunctioning and take the vehicle in as soon as possible.
Do you have iDrive on your 5- Series?
If so, go to menu (main screen) Select Car Data by pushing rotary knob over to the right or if you have navigation, click down the rotary knob while on the main menu then select “Check Control System” and it should show a message about traction control error
Look at the video on the link called “Owner Videos- Checking Oil” It will have how to get to that screen in there. http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/Owner/OwnersManualVideos.aspx?enc=nT9neZT5Lqet9MV4BVx2AjU8QUvO+eB0olJrworCH0w=
Good luck!

Q: What are the most obvious differences between the BMW 3 series and 5 series?
i have been trying to work this out for a little while and i cant really see a difference plz help

A: well, the 5 series is bigger, classier, roomy and most features come standard.

As for the 3 series, its more of a starter BMW, a lotta features dont come optional. Its smaller than the 5 series. Oh and the engine range is not as greater as the 5 series. In the 5 series you get the 550i (the top of the range engine, excluding the m5) and on the 3 series you get the 335i( excluding the M3)

And you might as well say that the 5 series has a bigger and faster engine. The M5 is a 5.0 v10.. where as the M3 is a 4 litre v8.

Q: How much does a E39 5 series bmw (2002) weigh?

A: These are the European weights. They will be close.

520i – 1495kg
523/5i – 1420kg
528i – 1440kg
530i – 1540kg
535i – 1610kg
540i – 1630kg

Q: How much a BMW 5 series costs in Chicago ?
Anyone can tell me ? Thanks

A: go to the edmunds.com site. you can find out everything there

Q: Can I put 16 inch rims from a 5 series BMW on my 1996 BMW 328i car?

A: Possibly. You need to know both the width and the offset of the wheels. The offset should be between 35-38 for the front and 41 max for rear. If you don’t know that information and the wheels are accessible, test fit them.

In front, you first want to be sure they are not touching the rotors. You then want to turn the wheel as far as it goes in each direction and check for rubbing. Also check that the tire does not touch the fender and you want at least the width of a pencil between the wheel and the strut lower spring perch. Usually in the rear the only clearance to check is the rear fender.

If the fenders are your only issue, you can flare them slightly by using a technique known as “rolling” them. If the wheels touch the front rotors or rub the wheelwells you can use spacers behind the wheels and longer lug bolts. Spacers are available in 3mm-10mm sizes.

Good luck!

Q: what is your opinion/advice on getting a 1990 BMW 535i 5 series with 138,000miles?
im only keeping it for a year to pay it off and re-establish my credit. do you think it will need major repairs within that time frame?? it just recently got a tune up and new tires.

A: I had a 90 535 and put 270K miles on it before my son wrecked it. It has the most reliable engine ever made. Mine did not use a drop of oil up to the end.
This is not a lot of miles for this car. However, you should have a mechanic look at the car, especially the suspension.
If it is an automatic that could also be a problem in the near future. If it checks out buy it and keep it.
I have had lots of BMW’s and they do not cost any more to work on than Japanese cars. For the most part, Japanese cars are somewhat more reliable than BMW’s but no that much more. BMW’s are way more fun to drive.

A: A good point made by you as to the influence of supply and demand effecting the value of used vehicles.
Many people do not purchase the big everything german car too much (with the exception of roadsters)
The mid sized vehicles have a higher demand

Q: How to turn on only the angel eyes on BMW 2002 5 Series. 5.30i. 10 easy points!!!?
i recently purchased a 2002. 5 -series bmw ( E 39 ) yet i am a little bit clueless when it comes to the headlight settings..

i know it’s nubish but please help the manual wasn’t very helpful

go to or call the local BMW dealer service rep
they’ll help you out with any questions

Q: bmw 5 series touring rear wiper moves 2mm when selected but no more?

A: The motor could easily be at fault, but remove the wiper arm and then turn it on and see what happens to the armature that the arm would be attached to.

That would tell you if the motor is at fault or not.

The switch may be at fault, but doubtful.

Q: Used 2007 BMW 5 Series?
I am looking to buy a 2007 used BMW 5 series. What are some of the differences between the 2009 bmw 5 series and the 2007 bmw 5 series.

A: There isn’t too much difference between the two. Probably the biggest difference will be the I-Drive interface. The 2009s are coming with a new more intuitive interface (and hard drive music storage). The motor may be slightly different. The 07 has the N52 motor while the 09 has the N52KP motor. Minor differences, but nothing important. The 07 will have a gray engine cover and a magnesium valve cover while the 09 will have a black engine cover with a plastic valve cover. Performance difference is negligible. Reliability etc is also the same. The one benefit you might get with an 07 is you can get one with a certified pre owned warranty. Which will cover you up to 100,000 miles versus 50,000 with the new warranty.

All in all, either car will be an excellent car.
